With the cold and the big frosts in sight, the lawn in winter may suffer… It’s up to us to take care of it!

Lawn in winter?

Having a beautiful lawn is not easy. You could even say that grass is the most complicated technique in the garden. Please note, I am talking about grass, a mixture of grasses such as can be seen on all or part of a golf course, for example. I’m not talking about the lawn, in other words, the grass that we let grow and that we mow when it gets tall. For the lawn, it is a green space and its owner is not traumatized by the presence of dandelion, clover or quack grass. It’s also respectable and it’s much less complicated. The difference is in your head! What tolerance level do you accept? Either you are picky and you want a perfect lawn, or you are not very fussy and the lawn suits you very well! Up to you…

Grass Option

If you have opted for the grass option, there is non-stop work and attention… Even in winter. These grasses, often ryegrass, are very fragile and it is best to avoid trampling on this lawn, otherwise the blades of grass break or do not resist the cumulative passages with the cold. Well, you tell me, that’s good because in winter, it’s best not to hang out outside, it’s cold there. With freezing, thawing, humidity and snow, with a lawn that no longer develops, the fragility is greater. With a heavy passage in winter, in spring, you risk finding the lawn with holes caused by the feet of each other. In spring and summer, this is not a problem, since the lawn has the ability to renew its strands. In winter, it is more complicated!

Last mowing

Oh!!!! I almost forgot to tell you, did you do the last mowing? The very last of the year, it is very important. It helps to level the grass or lawn. Purists will say it’s neater, but it’s also useful for not breaking the strands to the rest. As we have just seen, the longer the strands, the more brittle they are, especially in the cold, and the more likely they are to tear under your feet. So don’t be shy, even if winter is already advanced, cutting the grass is a good thing. And you can also add a basic fertilizer. In rather poor or too sandy soils, which often amounts to the same thing, the lawn needs a little food to stay green in all seasons.

The lawnmower

One important thing is to clean the housing of the mower, this is where the blade turns and where the grass clippings accumulate. This part must always be clean, the cut grass is acidic and can cause holes in the casing depending on its quality. Another important thing is oil change, blade sharpening and spark plug renewal… Not all of us have electric mowers, and for those who still have combustion engines, the best thing is to take the mower to the repairer. Do this during the winter, if not in the spring, as everyone has the same idea at the same time, you will find your mower a month later. It’s annoying when the grass has started to grow.
